Black Creators You Should Check Out

Ruin Contributor

by Raegan Cleary

Unfortunately, due to these little things called ‘white privilege’ and ‘systemic racism,’ black creatives often struggled to get the recognition and praise they deserve compared to their white counterparts. So here are some black creators I think deserve some love. Wanna add more to the list? Drop them in the comments below!

In 2017 Wanger was awarded an ASME Next award for outstanding work by a magazine journalist under the age of 30. Her notable work includes the piece Everywhere and Nowhere What it’s really like to be black and work in fashion.

Williams is an apparel designer for Puma, as well as the designer of her own line. Her Fall/Holiday 2016 capsule collection titled ‘Silver’ was a tribute to the silver sculptural fashion photography of Irving Penn.

Taylor, who you may recognize from her feature here at Ruin directed a photoshoot titled ‘Melanin Mermaids’ after hearing about the casting and subsequent backlash that Halle Bailey would be playing Ariel in the live-action Little Mermaid film. One of the photos was even featured on Bailey’s Instagram.

You may recognize Williams from Project Runway and Project Runway: Allstars. Her use of shape lends itself to super innovative designs that can be dressed up or dressed down.

Ilochi aims to heal and inspire through her fashion and art. She has been featured in multiple publications (including Ruin) and even has her own magazine! I love her bold use of texture and color in her looks.

If Brown seems familiar that’s because her cooking videos and soothing voice went viral on TikTok. I’ve never seen anyone make vegetables look so good! She also uses social media as a way to promote positive and good vibes to her audience.
