As a queer woman, pride month has always been an emotional but empowering time for me. Relevant to current events, pride started as a riot. The Stonewall Riots were a serious of demonstrations held by the LGBTQ community in response to a police raid on June 28th, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan, NYC. Black trans woman, Marsha P Johnson, was one of the most noteworthy individuals to participate in the riots. This piece was inspired by the often forgotten history of equal rights for the queer community. It is important for people to realize that important changes in America have not always been achieved through peaceful protests. I encourage individuals to educate themselves, listen to others, and support individuals during this time of rebellion and revolution.
